It is believed an argument broke out between two stockily built men and a group of men and women in their late teens. During the argument, one of the women either threw or struck one of the men on the side of his head with a glass bottle, causing it to smash and leaving him with numerous cuts.
A 19-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding and bailed until 14 July 2012 pending further inquiries.
Police are continuing to appeal for information. Detective Constable Ian Lloyd said: “This attack happened on the same day as the annual band contest, so there would have been a lot of people in the street who may have witnessed what happened. We need to speak to those people as they may have vital information about this attack and will help us piece together exactly what has led up to this assault and identify anyone who may have been involved.
“Luckily the man did not suffer any serious injuries but such a display of violence could easily have caused permanent injuries so we are taking this very seriously. I would again ask that anyone who has information or witnessed the argument, come forward and speak to us.
“It is important that this unsavoury incident does not detract from the band contest itself and tarnish the reputation of both the event and the people who attended, the overwhelming majority of whom behaved impeccably.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Oldham CID on 0161 856 1987 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
